Intestinal surgeries are procedures focused on rectifying either the small or large intestine (colon) and can also include the stomach. The intestines perform numerous bodily functions. The small intestines are primarily responsible for the absorption of food and nutrients while the large intestines, also referred to as the colon, absorb water and excrete solid waste. A common procedure performed with the intestines is the removal of intestinal obstruction where an area of the small intestine or colon is blocked preventing normal passage of food and fluids. Another example is large bowel reduction surgery which is performed to treat several conditions including colon cancer.
Gastrointestinal surgery is the parent category of intestinal which specializes on the esophagus, stromach, intestines, colon, pancreas, and liver.
